History

Mattern & Craig was founded in Roanoke, Virginia in February 1978 by J. Wayne Craig and E. K. Mattern, Jr.  The firm was established to offer comprehensive civil and sanitary engineering services to public, corporate and governmental agencies.  The firm has consistently adhered to its original objectives, and gradually enhanced their capabilities by adding experts in transportation, structural engineering, surveying, site planning and solid waste.  As the firm grew, offices were opened in Kingsport, Tennessee in February 1992; Asheville, North Carolina in July 1994; Johnson City, Tennessee in December 1998; Statesville, North Carolina in November 2013; and Charleston, South Carolina in March 2020.  In May 2019, the Statesville office was relocated to Hickory, NC.  Mattern & Craig became an employee-owned firm through the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) on January 1, 1988.

Our Goal & Point-of-View

Our goal is to be the leading engineering firm in the regions we serve.  Building off our 40+ year heritage and track record, we strive to complete projects on time and on budget. Every project, and every contact with clients and the community represents an opportunity to strengthen the firm’s reputation. We know that our future success depends on these tenets.

Our fundamental purpose is to serve the public interest. We do that by providing quality engineering, construction management, and development services to both government and private organizations. Approximately 85 percent of our projects are with local, state or federal agencies – many have been clients since the founding of the firm in 1978.  The firm offers the breadth and depth of expertise and services of a large engineering firm, along with unmatched personal attention to clients by senior leadership.
