Including the bridge widening of Piedmont Drive over Sandy River. Existing bridge was 4 span, 300 ft. long curved precast concrete girder structure. Substructure supported drilled shafts.

Mattern & Craig is currently preparing right of way and construction plans for the roadway portion of T.I.P. project number B-4155. Services to include hydrological and hydraulics design studies to determine the requirements for all hydraulics - related structures.

Powhattan Dam Rehabilitation

Design and construction administration services for rehabilitation of concrete spillway for earthen dam. Project also included hydraulic analysis and reclassification for the dam and preparation of reinspection report, O&M application and Emergency Action Plan.

Route 35 Bridge Over I-95
Prince George County, Virginia
VMS, INC.

Complete engineering services involved inspection, testing, evaluation of alternatives, report of findings, recommendations, and design of repairs to this 4-span, 245 foot long continuous steel girder bridge. Project included in-depth concrete deck investigation and evaluation. Tests performed included reinforcing steel depth, corrosion potential, corrosion rate and chloride contents. Rehabilitation included phased deck replacement, raising structure, replacing existing girders, approach slabs replacement, minor substructure repairs, waterproofing, and detailed maintenance of traffic plans.

Bridge Rehabilitations
Mitchell County, NC

Mattern & Craig provided design services for the repair or replacement of 33 privately owned bridges or culverts damaged by flooding. Structure lengths varied from 10 to 50 feet. Project funded by Community Development Block Grant Program. Project also involved participation in public meetings.

I-581 Valley View Boulevard Interchange and Bridge
City of Roanoke, Virginia

This project included surveys, geotechnical, and preparation of construction documents (roadway and bridge) and shop drawing review for new trumpet style interchange on I-581 with Valley View Boulevard. Project included 2-span, 72.6 meter continuous steel plate girder bridge structure with integral bikeway, cast-in-place substructure supported by steel H-piles and mechanically stabilized earth approach walls, utilizing VDOT's IGrds and MicroStation metric drafting system.

The project was completed at a total estimated cost of $5,000,000.

Blackwater Creek Bikeway Connector Trail
Lynchburg, Virginia

Project included preparation of construction documents and construction administration services for a pedestrian/bikeway facility connecting the existing Blackwater Creek Trail system with historic Point of Honor. The project included a new 120 ft open truss type single span pedestrian/bikeway bridge with a pitched metal roof over Blackwater Creek. The project was partially funded with a TEA-21 grant through VDOT.

Second Street Bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad

Complete engineering services for design of Second Street, NW, from Salem Avenue to Gainsboro Road, and Wells Avenue from Williamson Road to First Street. Design of the Second Street Bridge over the Norfolk Southern tracks, with a 6-span continuous curved steel plate girder structure. Project involved design and coordination of VDOT Standard cantilevered retaining wall and mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls for bridge approaches.

Project involved significant coordination with Norfolk Southern and numerous adjacent utilities. Project also included design of bridge parapet for aesthetic considerations, design of concrete arch bridge structure for Orange Avenue widening and design of special drainage structures and overhead sign bridge.

Pedestrian Walkway
Carilion Health System
Roanoke, VA

Design of a new covered walkway linking the Carilion Riverwalk Parking Garage to the main entrance of Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The project includes a new 170 foot clear span covered pedestrian bridge over the Roanoke River, and a covered walkway at each end of the bridge. Project included utility adjustments, lighting, aesthetic considerations, permits, and hydraulic analysis of Roanoke River.

Clearview Business Park Shell Building
Martinsville, Virginia

Provided site survey and geotechnical investigation, site design, grading and drainage, stormwater management, utilities, and design of 50,000 SF shell building in Clearview Business Park located in Martinsville, Virginia. Shell building services included structural design with building expandable in two directions to 112,000 SF; construction plans and specs; bidding documents; construction administration; and construction stakeout. Project was EDA funded.
