I-581 Valley View Boulevard Interchange and Bridge
City of Roanoke, Virginia

Surveys, geotechnical analysis and preparation of construction documents for a new trumpet interchange on I-581 to serve major retail/commercial development and regional airport. Interchange and bridge were designed to accommodate future fourth lane and collector-distributor roads on I-581. The project included one mile of 4-lane divided approach roadway with curb, gutter, sidewalks and two new and one modified, interconnected signalized intersections. Project included pedestrian/bicycle facilities through the interchange, across the new bridge and connecting to future greenway along Lick Run on west side. A major stormwater detention basin was constructed in the trumpet loop. Basin served as a temporary sediment basin during construction to protect adjacent stream. Additional special erosion control measures were employed to protect Lick Run, which passes through downtown Roanoke. Limited construction administration services were provided.

The project was funded by the City of Roanoke, and reviewed, approved, advertised and constructed by VDOT. The project was performed under fast track methods, requiring only 18 months from surveys to completion of construction. Survey includes GPS, horizontal control, digital vertical control, photogrammetric control for low altitude helicopter photography and high altitude aerial photography, mapping and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) annotation, bridge situation survey, property research and right of way acquisition plats. Low altitude helicopter photography with extensive GPS and conventional field control was required for accuracy and crew safety. Project also involved participation in public meetings.

The project was completed at a total estimated cost of $5,000,000.
